The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) issued a statement on Tuesday regarding a potential data breach impacting 3,392 residents in or near Tyler, Texarkana, Longview, Marshall, Beaumont, and Nacogdoches.
According to the release, a staff member was found to have emailed spreadsheets containing sensitive health and personal information to a personal email account between September and October 2023. The incident prompted HHSC to report the matter to the Texas Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General for investigation. While it remains unclear if any information was disclosed or misused, HHSC confirmed that the data was accessed by an unintended recipient.
In response, HHSC is offering affected individuals one year of free credit monitoring. Notifications regarding the breach have been sent via mail to those impacted.
HHSC emphasized its commitment to data security, highlighting that staff members undergo annual security and cybersecurity training. Measures are being taken to safeguard confidential information.
