Major Data Breach Hits Mortgage Giant Mr. Cooper, Exposing Personal Details of 15 Million Customers

In a recent revelation, Mr. Cooper, the mortgage and mortgage servicing company formerly known as Nationstar, disclosed a significant data breach compromising the personal information of every current and former customer, impacting nearly 15 million individuals nationwide, including those in Arizona.

The company, which identified the breach on October 31 of last year, stated in SEC filings that unauthorized access to sensitive data, including names, birth dates, social security numbers, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, was detected. Letters notifying affected customers have been sent out in the past few weeks.

To address the aftermath, Mr. Cooper is providing two years of free credit monitoring and identity protection services to all current and former customers as of October 31, 2023. These services, facilitated by Cyberscout through Identity Force, a TransUnion company specializing in fraud assistance, will be outlined in notification letters sent to customers.

In response to the breach, Mr. Cooper has established a dedicated call center, supported by TransUnion, and customers can reach out at 1-833-960-4745 (toll-free) from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm ET. Additional information is available at www.mrcooperincident.com.

In an official statement, Mr. Jay Bray, Chairman and CEO of Mr. Cooper Group, expressed regret for the incident, emphasizing the company’s commitment to customer trust. The mortgage giant has allocated $25 million to cover the costs associated with the data breach, as disclosed in the SEC filing.

The breach, characterized by unauthorized access to technology systems, prompted Mr. Cooper to implement response protocols, shut down systems, and collaborate with cybersecurity experts and law enforcement in a thorough investigation. The company continues to investigate the matter, striving to rectify the situation and ensure the security of its customers’ information.
